The project involves a permanent laser display illuminating the
Greenwich Meridian 'making the invisible visible'. The laser beam
passes through the central space of the Old Royal Observatory and
out over North London. The installation effectively shows how the
Meridian crosses the Thames three times within a couple of miles,
allowing the reflection of the beam to be used to great advantage.
In early May the stretch of the Thames under the beam became the
setting for a monumental one night performance that further developed
the notion of making the invisible visible. This large scale event
which was seen by twenty thousand people on the night explored the
poetic, social and historical connotations of the Meridian. The
realisation
involved a flotilla of 60 boats and barges with monumental special
effects and aerial pyrotechnics accompanied the choreographed sound
performance.
The project was a winner of the Callouste Gulbenkian big event production
award as well as receiving funding from LAB, Arts Council and sponsors.
