Three Kinetic Sculptural Features, Pasadena, California

Trio Development Company

The three elements of the project express the key Trio development aspirations stated in the client’s brief as: ‘Culture, Commerce and Community.’ As noted in the architects’ concept statement the redevelopment of this entire city block, in the heart of the Playhouse District, with two on-site historical buildings, presents a number of challenges, as well as opportunities. The scale, orientation and massing of the three elements of the Three Graces are designed to compliment the architectural concept of the Trio building as they animate the top of the building facade. The three kinetic sculptures are designed to provide an iconic presence on the corner of Colorado Boulevard and El Molino Avenue, visible from all the main medium distance approaches.

The three kinetic sculptural elements are designed to freely move with the wind, and are to be internally lit with a programmatic colour change. The lighting of the
vertical fins will be developed into a corresponding lighting approach in the surrounding floorscape, further accentuating the directional orientation and sense of place.
