The spatial and urban organisation will be expressed
through a helical architectural framework evoking the complexity
of the DNA
genome discovery - the map of life, thus bringing a new overall
21st century identity to the Highline project, a new recognisable
New York landmark. The helical trellis wrapping around the Highline
will define a series of specific programmatic zones created by
a progression of circular / elliptical pergolas. The trellis will
also act as the main structural support for the elevated ribbon-like
walkways and the integral vertical access points/ramps. The leading
edge of the trellis will create and frame belvederes, as a response
to the surrounding urban grain, from which to view the surrounding
city and the river Hudson.
The Highline is given several key public
realm spaces starting with the Hudson Plaza, continuing through
the Market/restaurant/bar area, the Big Apple Orchard
and terminating in a dramatic vertical feature from which to view the surrounding
city.
The Big Apple orchard celebrates through direct metaphor New
York City with an extensive and varied orchard providing an important
expanded public realm
space
from which to appreciate the river Hudson. The vertical feature, in the form
of an observation tower, will provide a unique and integrated sculptural
opportunity for the panoramic view of the New York City. |
