Light at Docklands:
DLR & Canary Wharf Lighting Project, London

Winner of British Gas Arts Council working for Citites award

DLR & London Docklands Development Corporation + Canary Wharf plc

The project was designed to celebrate the completion of the Docklands Light Railway mass transit system. The implementation of the project has involved the light and electronic transformation of four key buildings, Canary Wharf tower and a railway viaduct. The complex electronic programming ensured that the light installations responded to the movement of the computer-operated trains. The practical implementation has involved extensive consultations with the Railway Inspectorate and the emergency services. The funding of this project has involved a consortium of fifteen sponsors. The installation was active for a period of four weeks and has attracted considerable number of visitors.
As a part of the outreach programme local schools were involved in the trans-formation of seven stations in a visual arts project that has been enthusiastically received both by the users of the railway and by the local community.
